Help test a new version of the HHCAHPS Survey questionnaire!

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is implementing a Web mode experiment to test both a revised, shorter, version of the HHCAHPS Survey and a web-based mode of administration. Recruitment for this effort is underway. Data collection will span three consecutive sample months, beginning in late 2021.

Participation in the mode experiment is easy!

  • Agencies interested in participating in the HHCAHPS Web mode experiment should complete the online Participation Interest Form available on the HHCAHPS Mode Experiment website. A direct link to the form is provided here: Participation Interest Form
  • Participating agencies will not need to change their usual process for submitting files to their HHCAHPS Survey vendor. Instead, for each sample month, the HHCAHPS Survey Coordination Team (RTI) will work directly with participating agencies’ HHCAHPS Survey vendors to receive “leftover” monthly sample after the regular monthly HHCAHPS sample has been selected. The intent of this approach is to not interfere with agencies’ Annual Payment Update (APU) participation requirements.
  • There is no cost to agencies to participate, as CMS is covering the cost of data collection and analysis.

Sampled patients for the mode experiment will be randomly assigned to one of four experimental modes (mail-only, telephone-only, mail with telephone follow-up, or web with mail follow-up). Data will be collected and analyzed by RTI. Summary reports with agency results compared to aggregated results of other participating HHAs will be provided to participating vendors and agencies after data collection and analysis activities are completed.

Information about this mode experiment can be found on the official HHCAHPS Mode Experiment website – https://hhcahpsmode.rti.org. Approved HHCAHPS Survey vendors will also be reaching out to their client HHAs soon with additional information and materials.

If you have questions, you can contact the HHCAHPS Survey Coordination Team via email at hhcahpsmode@rti.org or call toll-free at (866) 662-8174.
